Teaching Kids to Sort Laundry

Sorting Hamper

Now that the kids are back at school, you might find yourself doing more laundry on the weekend. Weekends can easily be absorbed by washing, drying, and folding clothes and linens for the whole family. How can you get some of your weekend back?

If you have kids, whether they are small children who spill on themselves or teenagers with demanding wardrobe changes for every activity, sport, and social event, laundry is just part of the routine. But if you’re struggling to establish and maintain a routine, then there are some steps you can take to ensure laundry doesn’t pile up and ruin your weekends. Get the kids involved with the pre-wash work.

Create laundry hamper stations for each kids’ bedroom and bathroom. This goes beyond just providing a hamper. First determine how you most often separate clothes (light, dark, color) and provide a hamper for each separation. It doesn’t have to be a luxury hamper. Often a new waste basket or bin will do. Mark each hamper for the separation it is for. Then, if your children are old (and responsible) enough, supply each station with at least one bottle of stain or spot remover or pre-wash spray. Caution: do not teach this task to small children for their own safety. Now that your station is set up, teach the kids how to sort their clothes and spray any stains and spots as they go.

Teaching kids how to at least separate their laundry and apply spot treatments is just one small step to minimizing a mountain of laundry on the weekend. Get the whole family participating in doing some of the prep work for laundry and you can begin taking back some of your time.
